Erotic Sculptures, Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a village in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Khajuraho is well known for temples and its erotic sculputres.

The temples are most famous for the erotic temple carvings, although these carvings represent only about 10% of the total ornamentations. There has been considerable discussion over the motivations for their construction and their striking decorations.

Actually many Hindu temples have similar representations, but not many concentrate so strongly on the human sexual experience. There are themes drawn from tantrism and from the from the "Kama Sutra" that perhaps served as a visual manual for happiness and pleasure. The eroticism also perhaps could ward off the threats of the amorous rain god Indra.

The the temples additionally commemorate the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, whose union formed the basis of cosmis energy and are replicated in the human sexual act. The temples commemorate and honor women. They commemorate also the joy of life, as there are also numerous scenes of everyday life.

The name Khajuraho may be derived from khajura, which grows freely in the area and perhaps because there were two golden khajura trees on a carved gate here. The old name was Kharjuravahaka, the scorpion symbolizing poisonous lust.

The temples were built under the late Chandela kings between 950 and 1050 AD in a truly inspired burst of creativity. With the fading of Chandela fortunes, the importance of Khajuraho waned but temple building continued until the 12th century at a much reduced pace.

The Chandelas were followers of the Tantric cult which believes that gratification of earthly desires is a step towards attaining the ultimate liberation. Tantrism has been mostly misunderstood and the Philosophical part of Tantras like the Mahanirvana Tantra have been totally forgotten. This was one of the reasons why Tantrics perished. Nevertheless it remains a distinct path of Spiritual Practice though it has very few followers all over the world.

At a time when the whole world is ushering in the new millennium, the world should look back at another millennium. Ten centuries back the Chandelas built these temples. These temples are true masterpieces of art and sculpture; Simple poetry in sand stone. They symbolize life as a whole; from the divine to the erotic; and from the eternal to the mortal. One looks at these temples in awe. Clearly depicting life in the 10th century. The lives of people, their way of life, customs, dresses, etc. It was during this period that the tantric moment was in its peak. Tantra is a way to realize moshaksa (enlighten), through the unification of the man n women. If one were to look at the Lingam (Shiva), and the yoni (Shakti);it is the unification of the falis and the yoni. In the Far East it is know as the unified ying and yang energy.

Khajuraho walled sculptures include depiction of numerous deities, their attendants, celestial maidens in sensuous positions and embracing couples.
