DMRC provides a safe and comfortable
means of travel to lakhs of commuters every day. Continuing its commitment
towards the safety of its passengers, Delhi Metro has begun training
all its operations and maintenance staff on disaster management.
With a view to reducing the problems of Delhis commuter, the
launching of an Integrated Multi Mode Mass Rapid Transport System
for Delhi had long been under consideration.
It is recommended a 198.5 km predominantly rail based network, with
first phase to cover a length of 55.3 km, report was completed by
RITES during 1995.
The present proposal of modified first phase of the Delhi MRTS project
approved by the Union Cabinet will cost approximately Rs. 4860 crores
(at April, 1996 prices) and will comprise a network of 11 km to underground
(METRO) corridor along with 44.30 km of elevated / surface (RAIL)
corridors. It will have 45 station in all.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) awarded the contract for General
Consultancy for Phase II to a consortium of five companies that is,
Pacific Consultants International (PCI), Parsons Brinckerhoff International,
Japan Railway Technical Services, TONICHI Engineering Consultant and
RITES Ltd. These companies had earlier provided the consultancy for
Phase I of the Delhi Metro Project also.
DMRC has built India's first extradosed bridge near Pragati Maidan.
It will be part of the Barakhamba Road-Indraprastha section.
DMRC has been providing a world-class traveling experience to citizens
of New Delhi for nearly four years. Sixty trains sets, each consisting
of four coaches, presently operate on DMRC's Phase-I network serving
about five lakh commuters everyday.
Delhi Metro trains are equipped with PEA System which is to be used
by passengers in case they face any problem inside the train such
as eve-teasing, pick-pocketing, health problems, etc. They can then
talk directly with the train operator (TO).
Delhi Metro celebrated its 10th Foundation Day on May 3, 2006, in
a glittering function organized at the Satya Sai Auditorium. Delhi
Minister for Transport and Power Shri Haroon Yusuf was the Chief Guest
on the occasion and presented the MD's awards to 23 staff members
for their outstanding performance in their respective fields of work.
Two new awards were also instituted this year - 'Metroman of the Year
2005-06' and 'Best Maintained Metro Station 2005-06'.
